Best Practices

The institution has developed many best practices for improving the curricular, co-curricular, extra-curricular activities of the students.

Title of practices

“Employable Skill Development and Campus Recruitment.”

Goal

The goal of the institution to start a B.P.O training Program in the college campus was to make the students independent, during their studies and to financially support them as they belong to deprived section of society, and to train them professionally under “Earn while you Learn” program, as the institution believes in the principle “Education must always be productive”.

The Context: BPO training was powered by Vedanta Foundation and was run in collaboration with Enser Technologies. The aim was to provide jobs to the needy students in college campus.

By this programme students earned while they were learning. The placement cell in the college undertook this program. Institution prepared for some issues challenges that needed to be addressed before implementation of the practice.

Main challenges encountered and successfully sorted out are

Awareness:
Institution was aware of the problem of lack of awareness in students as well as in their parents, in this semi developed area, about the job. The team created awareness among students and their parents that BPO is a professional programme and it will provide them scope to be professionally trained. So a parent-teacher meeting was planned to organize to make them understand the importance as well as the benefits of this programme. Experts from various industries were invited who could explain the students and their parents about BPO program. They also convinced them about this great opportunity to earn their livelihood along with studies without leaving their home town. After a short training period they will be appointed by the companies.

Security:
The safety of students was the main issue faced in the implementation of this program. It was a matter of great concern for their families and the institution as well. As the institute is devoted for student’s education and their empowerment, we assured all of them that if they allow their children to work in this programme, their safety will be the prime concern of this institute and they will be completely secure as they will work within the campus.

The practice:
To train the students professionally and to make them self-dependent we arranged BPO training program in the campus, so that the girls of remote areas can be financially independent and secure. We made great efforts to achieve this goal by creating awareness among guardians and assured them for the safety of their children.

The parents of the students who were interested in jobs were informed in the institute for meeting. In that meeting all the issues regarding the programme and their safety also were discussed at length. All the doubts and worries of the parents and students were made clear. A Training program was organized for the students. Spoken English and personality development classes were conducted.

Space Problem:
Before the commencement of the programme we faced the problem of proper space to start BPO. The college sanctioned a big hall to be utilized by the BPO. The college charged the BPO a small fee for this place.

Evidence of success

BPO program, governed by Vedanta foundation, and was a successful stint in the Campus. It helped the poor students of deprived community to have job opportunity.

Many students proudly managed to pay for their educational expenses without laying any burden on their family members.

BEST PRACTICE 2

Title of the Practice

Participatory Learner-centered Method- We Do-We Conquer

Goal

The Best Practice of the college “Participatory Learner-centered method “We Do-We Conquer” was designed:

 To fulfill academic objectives of the college set in the Vision and Mission.

 To shift the focus from ‘teaching’ a subject to ‘learning’ a subject.

 To enhance the learning with audio visual inputs.

 To provide a foundation on which higher level cognitive skills can be built.

 To enable learners to identify their personal beliefs and attitudes with regard to       cultural issues, social issues and political issues.

 To provide maximum learning opportunities.

 To involve students in the departmental activities.

 To improve communication skills of students.

 To promote academic interest of identified slow learners.

 To provide hands on experiences during the process of learning.

The Context

Need addressed:

English is the only medium of instruction in our college and as per the guidelines of University of Mumbai, lectures and tutorials are conducted in English. However Students intake is largely from vernacular medium resulting into poor communication during teaching learning process, which hampers their academic performances. This prevents students from participating in teaching-learning process of any subject effectively. Hence, college has decided to design appropriate practice to support flexible and effective syllabus delivery in the classroom for improving their communication skill and to make teaching learning process interesting.

The Practice

 It is observed that the performance of the students in the examination and their level of participation in the classroom need to be addressed immediately. Inadequate vocabulary and lack of confidence about English language make them passive learner in the teaching learning process. Having understood this specific need of the learners the college has designed following activities:

 Emphasis on grammar during Business Communication and Communication skill based lectures.

 Poster making competition in different subject and also on recent trends and news are organized by each department. Poster competition were organised on GST, BREXIT, e-banking, demonetization.

 PPT presentation is organized by subject teachers.

 Give assignment to students on difficult topics.

 Arrange paper presentations of the students by subject teachers.

 During the National annual budget, students are encouraged to present and review the by poster, paper and ppt presentation.

 Other than regular exams, teachers conduct class test/ open book test.

 Guest lectures / Expert lectures are organized from time to time.

Use of ICT

 Power point presentation competitions are conducted regularly. Such competitions help students to test not only their oral communication but also their skill in making use of electronic medium available for mass communication.

 E-Literacy enhanced the confidence of the students in the area of communication and also prepares them for future challenges.

 Students are encouraged to make use of pictures, video clips, animation and sound clips to make their presentations innovative and effective.

 Students learn time management, addressing large gathering and reaching out to the masses with the help of electronic media. These are some of the aspects that are taken care of while organizing power point presentations and/ or competitions.

 Such competitions also provide the much needed practical sessions for students which test applicability of knowledge which they receive during lectures and tutorials.

Field visits

 Educational and industrial visits, visits to orphanage, Visit to School for Mentally retarded, old age homes, are organized to understand the business structures and to strengthen the relevance of classroom ideas with the competitive world.

Mock group discussion

Group discussion is a very important aspect in the recruitment process in global market, which trains those students to speak, who otherwise individually refuse to speak. It is a process where students are sensitized with the regards to various contemporary social and economic issues.

Pleasure Trip

To encourage the students in their academic results college announces that the toppers from every class will be taken for the pleasure trip to Delhi, Goa or Jaipur.

Evidence of Success

Results registered –

 Increased participation in curricular, co-curricular and extra- curricular activities.

 Increased use of ICT.

 Better relationship between teachers and students.

 Motivation for moving towards innovative teaching learning process.

 Students express freely in the classroom and interact with their teachers.

 Improved communication skill.

Problems Encountered

 Participation of students in learning activities mostly influenced by the peer pressure that hinder their participation.

 Participatory learner-centered innovative teaching techniques are at time difficult to adopt due to higher student-teacher ratio in the class yet such techniques are used with little modification by forming small groups of students.

 Most of the students are from vernacular medium background and hence making them participate on the subject discussion in English language is a bit difficult in the beginning.

 Heterogeneous nature of student community makes discussion on sensitive issues disturbing if not done under the strict supervision and guidance of the teacher.

 Effective use of ICT during participation by the students was absent in the beginning due to lack of knowledge and training among the students.

The college has made conscious and planned efforts to overcome the above-mentioned problems to ensure desired success in its innovative practices.

Resources required

 Support of management and college authorities to initiate the idea.

 Infrastructural support.

 ICT equipment availability.

 Longer duration stay of faculty on college campus.
